Karren Brady: West Ham ‘paid vice-chairman extra 438,000’ on top of salary for ‘consultancy work’
West Ham’s vice-chairman Karren Brady was paid almost half-a-million pounds by the club on top of her salary last season.Brady received 365,000 plus VAT from West Ham due to her consultancy work throughout Albert Smith’s purchase of a stake in the club; 10 per cent of West Ham was sold to the American billionaire in September 2017.According to The Times, her fee totalled 438,000, which was an extra payment on top of the 898,000 salary Brady is paid in her role as vice-chairman.Baroness Brady is now in her ninth year as West Ham’s vice-chairman1
Baroness Brady is now in her ninth year as West Ham’s vice-chairman
Brady’s consultancy work was ‘outside the scope of her role as vice-chairman’ and she ‘was paid accordingly as an external consultant’, according to a club spokesperson.West Ham’s accounts also reveal co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold were each paid 2.3million in August as interest on their 45million loans to the club.West Ham did make a net profit in 2017/18, but it was down from 43million in the previous campaign to 17.3million. There was also an increase in the wage bill, while matchday income at the London Stadium was 24.5million – lower than the 26.9million earned during 2015/16, the club’s final season at the Boleyn Ground. Further investment was made into the playing squad and coaching staff prior to the start of this season, with Manuel Pellegrini brought in as manager and the likes of Felipe Andersen, Andriy Yarmolenko and Issa Diop all signed by the club. The investment has paid off so far, with West Ham currently sitting 10th in the Premier League table just after the halfway point of the campaign.
