He was capped 73 times for his country and was namedFIFA Goalkeeper of the Year on six occasions, while he also had notable success at club level with Leicester and Stoke.Banks made his name as one of the Football Leagues best keepers during his time with Leicester, and won the first of his England caps while playing for the Foxes.He won the 1964 League Cup and repeated the feat eight years later during his time at Stoke.Current Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland pays tribute to Gordon Banks at the Britannia Stadium2

While he remains the only English goalkeeper ever to get his hands on the Jules Rimet trophy, Banks’ most defining moment came four years on from the glorious 66 triumph, at the World Cup in Mexico.Defying the laws of physics, he made a spectacular stop from a Pele header in a group stage clash with Brazil. It is regarded as one of the greatest saves of all time.It is rumoured the following exchange took place after the incident:
